The Downs Light Railway
Hoyland Down
Hoyland Down encompasses the workshops, engine sheds, carriage sheds and main terminus for the Downs Light Railway. Formerly named 'Windermere', all construction and maintenance works are carried out here.
For visitors to the Downs Light Railway, and those riding on the railway, Hoyland Down is your first port of call. Invariably ones' journey begins and ends here. |
Brock Hill Junction
Emerging from the Brock Hill Coppice, Brock Hill Junction is where the railway splits around Brock Meadow. The junction also includes a works siding, where track maintenance groups can upload material into works carriages for track repairs.
A project is currently underway to reinstate the abandoned railway, c1928, to make the railway into a continuous loop around the meadow. Future plans exist to re-establish a station on the meadow next to the junction. |
Brock Hill Meadow
Brock Hill Meadow exists as one of the School's sports pitches, and is invariably used for events.
The railway extends around this meadow, passing the old boating pond around the bottom of the meadow, back along side the School's all weather sports pitch. |
New Road Tunnel
The Downs Light Railway was built with two tunnels. The White House Tunnel, used as an air-raid shelter during WW2, is currently disused.
