8 Dec 2007 - Coupling conversion continues...
This programme removes the current chain couplings, which not only can be unreliable but can also makes driving more challenging along with degrading passenger comfort.
The new coupling system involves replacing the current hooks with a central grilled cast iron buffer. This incorporates three grill levels to allow three different coupling heights to connect Locomotives and Carriages together with a fixed coupling bar - replacing the chain.
The James Boyd is the lastest to undergo a coupling modification. In the picture shown, shows three pupils removing the end frame of the locomotive so that the central coupling holes can be accurately marked out and drilled in the workshops.
