Situated in the grounds of the Downs Preparatory School, on the Herefordshire side of the Malvern Hills, the Downs Light Railway stands to be the only railway to be directly maintained and operated by Children aged between 7 and 13 years.

The Downs Light Railway is also unique in the track gauge of 9 ½ inches, once a popular gauge during the Edwardian era, as there are only some eight known railways of this gauge.

The Downs Light Railway is used by The Downs School as an extra-curricular activity, forming a voluntary part of the weekly school timetable. Children learn more than simply 'playing trains', actively taking part in the maintenance and operational running of the railway.

A rare gem in present climates, Children gain the foundation skills in various basic engineering disciplines while actively taking part in an activity most cannot resist.

Additionally the Children gain the exceptional learning of team work, leadership and responsibility at an early age; providing a strong foot hold in their future education.

The railway's higher level maintenance, supervision and teaching are provided by the Trust's Operational Trustees and voluntary members. All are experienced in various engineering, educational training, and management fields providing a knowledgeable and safe environment for the children to learn.
